ABOUT MARK

BIOGRAPHY: Mark Campana was born and still lives in South Philadelphia. He attended the Art Institute of Philadelphia, studying graphic design, but became more interested in classic oil painting. In the late 1990’s, he began to paint ‘en plein air’ (from life, outside) using a collapsable French easel and choosing motifs in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse square and the surrounding streets. His repertoire gradually expanded to include diverse views of the small streets throughout the city, as well as the many restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and other small street-level businesses. He has also painted many ambitious views of the cityscape, the classic architecture, and the parkways and boulevards of the city. He has become familiar to many Philadelphians who have seen him countless times painting on the streets and in the parks of the city.

Mark also is a studio painter, painting portraits, figures, and still life from direct observation and large commissioned paintings that require use of studies and/or photographs. In the past 25 years, hundreds of his paintings have been acquired by local patrons and are in public and private collections mostly in the Philadelphia area. Mark exhibits twice yearly in The Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Annual, the oldest continually operating fine art show in the United States.
